Supportive School Environment Policy

Caloundra State Primary School has a major focus on the positive aspects of students’ behaviour while still addressing other behaviours. Our school looks to reward students for doing the right thing. The junior school students are rewarded through “Caloundra Rewards Outstanding Children,” or the “CROC” program.

Selected students in the junior school also have the opportunity to become the Super Student for a week. They are easily identified proudly wearing their bright red cape.

Every week our students in all year levels are publicly rewarded on one of three school parades. Students receive certificates for acknowledgement of work ethics or behaviour, helping others and also for attaining personal goals or achievements.

A whole school social skills program called Program Achieve identifies students doing well in one of five key areas. The areas are: Getting Along, Persistence, Resilience, Confidence and Organisation. These five keys actually make up one of our school rules, Be a Learner.

To make it easier for students and staff to remember our school rules, we only have four:

1. Be Safe

2. Be Respectful

3. Be Responsible and

4. Be a Learner

The school operates on a Behaviour Level System, from Level One to Level Four. Level One students are students who manage their own behaviour. Level Two students are those who, for a short period, require their teacher to support them with their behaviour. Level Three students require a member of Administration to help them with their behaviour. Level Four means that all in-school avenues have been exhausted and the student is suspended from school for a short period of time. When this synopsis was written, 94% of students were on Level One, 5% on Level Two, 1% on Level Three with no students on suspension.

Caloundra State Primary School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan is proactive. When needed it can react to inappropriate behaviours, but clearly as our data suggests, being proactive is the key.

School Chaplain

Our school is also fortunate to have a chaplain to assist students and families each week. Scripture Union Chaplains in state schools provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis – and for kids who just need a friend.

What does our scripture union chaplain do?

  • Foster a supportive, caring school environment.

  • Connect with students and be a positive role model to them.

  • Work closely with support staff to nurture and care for students.

  • Support students at risk through behaviour management programs.

  • Support staff and families from the wider school community.

  • Provide spiritual support, if requested.

  • Link students and families with other support groups in the community including holiday camps and youth groups.

  • Serve the school community in a number of ways including helping with sport activities and camps.
